Maldives Make History with First International Futsal Title

The Maldives national futsal team has made history by winning its first international trophy after defeating Bhutan at the SAFF Futsal Championship.

Maldives secured the title with one match remaining in the tournament, with their final fixture scheduled against Sri Lanka.

In the decisive encounter held at Nonthaburi Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, Maldives recorded a 3–1 victory over Bhutan, completing a flawless campaign with five wins from five matches and a maximum 15 points. The result ensured an unassailable lead at the top of the standings.

Securing the championship with a 100 percent winning record is a remarkable achievement for Maldives, particularly given the absence of an official indoor futsal facility in the country. The team’s dominant run included a commanding victory over regional powerhouse India, highlighting their strength and consistency throughout the competition.

Going into the match against Bhutan, Maldives required only two points to confirm the title. The three points secured ensured that no other team could close the gap in the standings.

This historic achievement marks a major milestone for Maldivian futsal, underscoring the sport’s growing potential and signaling a promising future on the regional and international stage.
