The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has officially announced that Eid al-Fitr will be observed on Friday, the 20th of this month.
The declaration was made following a special meeting held tonight at the Islamic Centre to verify the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of Shawwal.
In its statement, the Ministry confirmed that the Shawwal crescent moon was not sighted anywhere in the Maldives, nor was there any verified confirmation of its sighting from other Islamic countries.
As a result, Friday, March 20, has been designated as the 1st of Shawwal 1447 AH, and will be celebrated nationwide as Eid al-Fitr.
The moon sighting process was carried out in accordance with established procedures by the Department of Judicial Administration. Arrangements were made for individuals to submit testimonies of moon sightings before a judge in the Malé region, or before magistrates at island-level courts across the country.
