The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported that 15 houses were evacuated following a major fire at a warehouse near Thoiba Mosque last night, with 77 individuals provided temporary shelter.
According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the fire was reported at approximately 21:30 at a warehouse located in the Maafannu district, in close proximity to Thoiba Mosque.
The blaze, which originated in a facility used to store fertilizers and chemicals, rapidly intensified, resulting in a large scale fire. It was brought under control by around 23:15, with firefighters deploying specialized foam tenders from Velana International Airport.
In a statement issued early this morning, the NDMA confirmed that by 02:30, a total of 454 individuals from 15 nearby households had registered at the evacuation center. This included 69 women, 385 children, and 302 expatriates.
Temporary accommodation has been arranged for 77 individuals from 10 households. In addition, employers have taken responsibility for 280 expatriates, while the Maldivian Red Crescent has assisted a further 20.
While some families relocated to stay with relatives, the NDMA noted that the evacuations were primarily due to heavy smoke in the area. Seven individuals were treated for smoke inhalation and are reported to be in stable condition.
The warehouse was completely destroyed in the fire.
