Fayyaz Ismail Accuses President Muizzu of Undermining Economy for Political Control

Former Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party and former Economic Minister, Fayyaz Ismail, has strongly criticized President Mohamed Muizzu, alleging that the administration’s economic approach is aimed at weakening the national economy and increasing public dependence on government employment.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Fuvahmulah City ahead of the upcoming Local Council Elections, Fayyaz criticized the government’s current direction. He claimed that the administration is systematically undermining the financial independence of Maldivian citizens. According to Fayyaz, the government is obstructing the fisheries sector and placing pressure on small and medium enterprises, ultimately forcing people to rely on state employment for their livelihoods.

Fayyaz stated that reliance on government employment is being increased gradually, with the intention of using it as a means of control. He argued that such policies are designed to limit independence and shape citizens’ choices through economic pressure. He further said that these actions weaken the nation and prevent people from living with dignity and self sufficiency.

Commenting on the government’s overall performance, Fayyaz said that what he described as dishonesty and inefficiency within the administration has become evident to the public. He also stated that the outcome of the 2023 presidential election was a mistake that led to the loss of significant progress previously achieved by the country.

Referring to the upcoming Local Council Elections, Fayyaz said there is no justification for supporting the current administration. He called on the public to vote for candidates from the Maldivian Democratic Party and begin what he described as a process of reclaiming the country.

He concluded by describing the candidates from Fuvahmulah City as capable individuals and urged residents to support them in the election.
